Artist Statement

My work addresses reverence towards the natural world and explores my connection to it. Plants have always been part of my life and therefore a priority in my visual language. My work is done in the old, process driven method of etching on copper. I was initially seduced by the infinite amount of details one is able to obtain. With etching the line is emphasized. A line is created by first coating the plate with a resist. Then a needle is used to draw a design into the resist thereby removing areas where the etchant can bite out a trench. The trench is capable of holding ink while the resisted areas are left flat and the ink can be buffed away.

With etchings I draw upon the medium’s sensitive nature to build richness and depth composed out of hundreds of lines. In addition, I use aquatints to give the work a more graphic feeling. Aquatints are created by covering the plate with very fine particles so that the almost invisible openings between those dots can be etched. To the naked eye those tiny etched dots will appear as a gray tone. Shades of gray are achieved by altering the length of the etch, the longer the etch, the darker the tone will appear.

I often wonder at plants and how effortlessly they make growing look, how beautifully they cycle through the seasons, and how graceful they are in their dying. How much we could learn from there nature? My etchings are a tribute to that spirit.
