Artist Statement

My work is inspired in part by my dreams and by growing up in the midst of the Navajo and Zuni cultures. I use the monotype medium because it allows me to incorporate personal iconography, work in layers and explore positive and negative space.

I seek to transform the poetry of my dream journal into a visual representation that is accessible to the viewer. To achieve this I incorporate symbols which have a connection to my childhood, and I combine them with numbers and automatic writing. Monotype has allowed me to explore the fluidity of both thought and materials.  It is a new process for me and I am still at the "learning the limits" stage. The science and chemistry of printmaking has always appealed to me.

My work fills my need for a certain order within the precariousness of my dreams. I express my sense of connectedness to other cultures while recording my personal journey through a life that does not always seem to be mine.
