Artist Statement
I began making monotypes in early 2009 while I
was recovering from breast cancer. The monotype process has strong parallels
with finding what cancer survivors call “my new normal.”
My prints are made by building up an image
using 5-8 plates created through selective wiping. Each image requires me to
adjust my vision of the finished piece after each plate is dropped. The image
takes off in unexpected directions, and I have to react to what emerges after
each drop.
There are strong parallels between this process
and the survivorship process. The lessons I have learned are, “Set out on the
journey, but don’t plan too far ahead.” “Be open to the unexpected and unplanned
in your life and see what surprises are in store.” “You can’t see the design of
your life while you are in the middle of it. Only by looking back can you see
the beauty of what is.”
Not surprisingly, my current work focuses on
organic forms. Some pieces are more literal than others, but all share a common
bound in their exploration of the interplay of light and form. Things are not
always as they seem in my work, but life is always growing, flowing, and
restoring.
